Solar panels have no moving parts, so people assume there is nothing to maintain. In most of India that is nearly true. In Rajasthan it is not — because of dust.
A layer of dust you can barely see is enough to cut output by 15 to 20 percent. Over a dry season that is thousands of rupees of electricity quietly lost, on a plant you already paid for.
How often should you clean in Rajasthan?

How to clean panels safely
- Clean early morning or after sunset, never in the middle of the day. Cold water on hot glass can crack a panel.
- Use plain water and a soft brush or microfibre mop on a long handle. Rajasthan's hard water may leave marks, so wipe rather than let it dry on its own.
- Never use detergent, soap, acid or any abrasive scrubber. These damage the anti-reflective coating permanently and can void the panel warranty.
- Never walk on the panels, and never use a high-pressure jet. Micro-cracks from either are invisible but permanently reduce output.
- If your roof is high or the array is on an elevated structure, hire someone with a harness. No amount of saved electricity is worth a fall.
Beyond cleaning: what actually needs checking
- Monthly: Open your inverter's monitoring app and compare this month's generation with the same month last year. A steady drop is the earliest warning of a problem.
- Every six months: Have connections and terminals checked for tightness. Rajasthan's heat cycles loosen joints, and a loose DC connection is a genuine fire risk.
- Annually: Get a thermal inspection to find hot spots, plus a check of earthing continuity and the surge protection device.
- Watch for shading. A tree that was small when you installed will eventually shade a panel. Because panels are wired in series, shading one can drag down a whole string.
- Check for bird nests under the panels before every summer. They block airflow, and hot panels produce less.
On a clear sunny day around noon, your system should be producing close to its rated capacity — a 3kW plant should show roughly 2.2 to 2.7 kW on the app. If it is consistently well below that on clean panels with no shading, call your installer. Do not wait for the annual service.
